UC Irvine Change of Major Criteria

College of Health Sciences

Due to strict limits on the number of students who can be admitted to the program and rigid sequencing of much of the upper division curriculum, major changes will be ordinarily considered only in the summer immediately preceding the sophomore and junior years.

Change of Major Requirements:

Students must meet BOTH requirements:

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • A minimum quarterly GPA of 2.0 in the quarter immediately preceding the change of major.
Course grades

Students entering as sophomores must complete the following:

  • Biological Sciences 93, Chemistry 1A-B-C, 1LB-LC, with no grade below “C”.
  • A 2.75 average in ALL courses completed that fulfill requirements for the Nursing Science major.
  • A maximum of 2 repeats of required courses.

Students entering as juniors must meet all requirements above. In addition, they must complete: Biological Sciences 97, 98, 99, and M122; Chemistry 51A; and a basic statistics course (Bio Sci 7, Math 7, Statistics 7, or equivalent).

Other
  • The program is limited to 25 new majors per year. Students completing their freshman year can be considered for transfer into the sophomore year if the number of majors in the current freshman class falls below 25.
  • An additional 25 students per year will be admitted to the major as transfer or change of major students with Junior standing. These students must complete all prerequisites for nursing courses prior to transfer into the major. Students may apply for transfer during the sophomore year.
  • Students interested in transferring should meet with the Program in Nursing Science Student Affairs Officer to plan their coursework.
  • All major change applicants are required to submit personal statements explaining their reasons for wishing to declare the major.
  • If the eligible pool exceeds the number of students that can be admitted to the major, the following additional criteria will apply:
  1. Grades in all required mathematics and science courses.
  2. Cumulative UC GPA.
  3. Evidence of commitment to a career in nursing as reflected in the personal statement and (optional) documentation such as a resumé and letter of recommendation.
